5 Seconds of Summer Tour - A review

Updated: Nov 26, 2023

The perfect hit of nostalgia

5 seconds of summer are an Australian band, who will be pretty recognisable to anyone from the ages of 18-24 for their hit singles, ‘She looks so perfect’, ‘Amnesia’ and ‘Jet Black Heart’. Having almost 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify, they have a pretty large fanbase, who are still committed to listening to all the band's music, old and new. I saw 5SOS at the O2 Arena in London, a brilliantly iconic music venue, bustling with life and energy. Arriving at the doors, I quickly got into the standing pit, within about 15 minutes of queuing, and ended up right in the middle of the pit, a glass of wine in my hand. Pretty much immediately the first support act started, followed by the second act about 45 minutes later.

5 seconds of summer began at about 8:45, starting the show off with a comedic introductory video, before the curtain on the stage fell, revealing the band in all their glory. The setlist was a brilliant mix of old and new songs, but leaned heavily on the fan favorite songs, most of which are at least 5 years old now. Their energy is brilliant and the atmosphere they create is welcoming and reminiscent of my younger years, as I have not missed a 5Sos tour since 2012. Their use of interactions with fans through the dice was unique and my personal highlight of the night, as the song it landed on was ‘English Love Affair’, one of my favorite old 5SOS songs, and pretty perfect for their London show. All members interacted with the audience, with drummer Ashton hyping the crowd up, and guitarist Micheal proclaiming his love for touring and their fans, which of course the crowd went wild for. Energetic, enjoyable, and fun, all things you expect at a show, especially one as big as a show at the o2 Arena.

The show was fueled with love, and a welcoming, enjoyable atmosphere for all fans, old and new. With spectacular performances from all members, who clearly just want to have fun, I will continue to return to show after show.
